Dads & Tots

In celebration of Father’s Day, I created a movement program for 2-4 year olds and their Dads.

We began the program by doing some basic stretches.

I found most of my action songs on the site Songs for Teaching. Here are some we did:

Snake Song (use shakers)

A snake will slide, and slide, and slide, and spin

Slide, and slide and slide, and spin to one side and back again

Snakes slide out and slither in

A snake will rattle, and rattle, and rattle, and roll

Rattle, and rattle, and rattle, and roll

Up real high and down real low

Snakes will rattle and roll like so

I Got a Wiggle

I got a wiggle in my foot.

Oh no!  I got a wiggle in my foot.

I got a wiggle in my foot and it seems like it won’t stay put.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I got a big wiggle in my foot

I got a wiggle in my knee.

I got a wiggle in my knee.

Oh no!  I think I got a wiggle in my knee.

I got a wiggle in my knee as you can plainly see.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I got a big wiggle in my knee.

I got a wiggle in my hand.

I got a wiggle in my hand.

Oh no!  I think I got a wiggle in my hand.

I got a wiggle in my hand and I don’t know where it’s gonna land.

Wiggle, Waggle, Wiggle, I got a big wiggle in my hand.

I got a wiggle in my nose.

I got a wiggle in my nose.

Oh no!  I think I got a wiggle in my nose.

I got a wiggle in my nose.  It came all the way from my toes.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I got a big wiggle in my nose

I had a wiggle in my ears.

I had a wiggle in my ears.

Oh no!  I think I had a wiggle in my ears.

I had a wiggle in my ears, but it wiggled right outa here.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I had a big wiggle.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I had a big wiggle.

Wiggle Waggle Wiggle, I had a big wiggle in my ears

Put Your Hands Up in the Air

Put your hands up in the air.

Put your hands down on your nose.

Put your hands up in the air.

Now bend down and touch your toes.

Everybody turn around,

Now let’s all jump up and down.

Put your right hand in the air.

Put your right hand on your lips.

Put your left hand in the air.

Now put both hands on your hips.

Everybody turn around,

Now let’s all jump up and down.

Walk back quietly to your seat.

Don’t let the teacher hear your feet.

Put your hands in your lap.

Bow your head and take a nap,

Bow your head and take a nap.

Animal Movement

Bunny jump

And around I go Around I go

Around I go

Bunny jump And around I go

Hi Ho! Hi Ho! Hi Ho!

Wiggle Like fish

And around I go Around I go

Around I go

Wiggle like fish And around I go

Hi Ho! Hi Ho! Hi Ho!

Kick my hooves

And around I go Around I go

Around I go

Kick my hooves And around I go

Hi Ho! Hi Ho! Hi Ho!

We also did typical songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” “Shake My Sillies,” and “Wheels on the Bus.” Before we did our goodbye song, we lay quietly on the floor and had a nice stretch and some deep breathing.

Red Storytime

I was inspired by Awesome Storytime’s great blog about her storytime on the same subject.

I had a few red props on the table and we talked about other things that are red.

Our first book:

My two flannels were very simple. I did a counting one called Five Red Tulips and one called Big Red Apple which was cute.

I found my action rhyme on Story Time All Stars list of favorites:

Red, red, red:
(To the tune of “This Old Man”)
Red, red, red, touch your head.
Blue, blue, blue, tie your shoe.
Brown, brown, brown, touch the ground.
White, white, white, take a bite.
Black, black, black, touch your back.
Purple, purple, purple, draw a circle.
Pink, pink, pink, give a wink.
Gray, gray, gray, shout hooray!

Our second book:

We ended by watching “Ten Apples Up on Top” by Dr. Seuss.

Candy Experiments

I decided to have some fun with candy. Most of the experiments I found by doing a quick internet search, but I also found ideas in this book.

We have an outside reading garden, so this was done out there to prevent mess. The Diet Coke & Mentos experiment was done on our front lawn.

Drop Sour Patch Kids into a cup of clear water, sprinkle a bit of baking soda, and if the candy fizzes then it meant there was acid in the candy.

Have two bowls out. Fill one with water and one with Gatorade. Drop Skittles in each bowl and see which dissolves the Skittles faster. We also did this with M & M’s.

Put cotton candy in a bowl of water and see what happens. Put cotton candy in a bowl of vegetable oil and see what happens after a few minutes.

Pour one package of Pop Rocks in a glass of water and let it sit for a few minutes. Add a second package and see what happens.

Mentos & Diet Coke:  Diet Coke is full of carbon dioxide gas. When you drop a Mentos, bubbles of carbon dioxide form on the surface of the candy. So many bubbles form so fast that they push the soda right out of the bottle.

Push a marshmallow into the opening of a soda bottle. Squeeze or stomp on the bottle to see if the marshmallow shoots out. This didn’t work as well as I hope, but it was still fun.

I taped most of the experiments on my phone, but can’t get them to send to my e-mail yet. Once I do 9if I do),  I’ll post them.
